Art was the second child of John Martin & Alice Louise (Humphreys) Polhemus, born at home in Industry Township, Phelps County, Nebraska. He was the second child but grew up as the oldest of several children since the first baby died shortly after birth. After graduating from school, Art's "tramping" took him to various locations, including upstate New York where his mother's family resided before migrating to Nebraska.

Based on the collection of postcards from young women he saved, Art was quite a desirable young man. It was Laura Alice Fitch who caught his eye, and they were married in 1914. Art fathered three sons and one daughter. A hard working farmer and highly respected horseman, Art took over the Polhemus homestead around 1921 when his parents retired from farming. While vacations were infrequent occurrences, he enjoyed an occasional hunting trip to a friend's ranch in Wyoming.

Following a medical event in 1970 that made it impossible for his wife or other family members to care for him, Art was moved to the Bertrand Nursing Home, where he received excellent care by the dedicated staff. His son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Soffia, visited him as often as possible throughout his eight year residence there.

Survivors included his wife Laura; sons James (Sylvia) of Funk, Gene (Soffia) of Kearney, and Lynn (Evelyn) of rural Holdrege; daughter Laural Beth (Art) Pierson of Corpus Christi, Texas; 13 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Lindstrom. He was preceded in death by grandson, David Polhemus; brother-in-law, Sidney Lindstrom; and daughter-in-law Helen Polhemus.
