JAMES WENZEL PECH

James W. Pech, 70, who established one of the city’s early day livery stables
and later headed a transfer and moving business, died last night at the home,
736? North 12th street. He had been ill for some time, and confined to his home
the past year.
Funeral services, under Masonic auspices, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from
the Masonic temple, the Rev. Victor Nearhoof of the St. Paul’s M.E. church
officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Pech was born in the town of Kossuth in 1870 and when a boy of 15 came to
this city to complete his school. At the age of 20 he engaged in the livery
business and established a stable on North Eighth street opposite the fire
station. In the period between 1890 and 1900 extra teams for use of the fire
department were provided by livery stables and Mr. Pech had a contract to
furnish horses to the city to haul apparatus to fires.
He also furnished carriages and hearses for funerals and after the coming of
the automobile, discontinued this business to engage in the garage business.
He was active in this field until his health failed.
Mr. Pech was a well known musician and a member of the Manitowoc City band for
years. His other affiliations included the Masonic lodge, St. Paul’s M.E. church,
Men’s Brotherhood of the church, and the Musicians’ union.
In 1901 he married Miss Ellen May Day. The widow survives with two sons, George
of this city, Allison, a senior student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison;
two daughters, Ethel, a teacher in the Garfield school here, Mrs. Fred Asmus of
Grosse Point, Mich.; four brothers, Fred, Jerry and Henry of Kossuth, Emil, of
this city; sister, Mrs. Rose Soukup of this city.
The body will be removed from the Vogelsang funeral home to the Masonic Temple,
and can be viewed there from Friday at 2 p.m. until the time of the services
Saturday.
