ROSCOE G. MERRILL, A PIONEER BUSINESS MAN OF CITY, DEAD
EARLY DAY LUMBERMAN DIES AT THE ADVANCED AGE OF 86 AFTER 64 YEARS
RESIDENCE IN THE CITY
Roscoe G. Merrill, one of the pioneer settlers of Manitowoc county and
identified with the early business life of the city, having been engaged in
the lumbering business and later in the mercantile line, died at his home at
1804 Michigan avenue, Sunday at the advanced age of 86 years. Death was due
to the infirmities of age.
Mr. Merrill was a native of Maine, having been born at Hixton, near Portland,
that states August 29, 1828, where he received his early education. In 1850,
at the age of 22, Mr. Merrill came to Manitowoc and with exception of a few
years had resided here continuously since, for sixty-four years. He engaged
in the lumbering business and later conducted a flour and feed store at eighth
and Buffalo streets for some years.
For the past fifteen or twenty years Mr. Merrill had lived a retired life,
especially since the death of Mrs. Merrill which occurred fifteen years ago.
Mr. Merrill was well and favorably known and a good citizen who was active in
the development and growth of the city in its earlier days.
Two children, Mrs. George Bass and Dr. L. C. Merrill, both of Chicago, survive
Mr. Merrill.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from St. James
Episcopal church of which Mr. Merrill had been a senior warden for forty years.
Mr. Merrill had always taken an interest in the welfare of the church and had
been one of the foremost men in the direction of the affairs of the parish.
There will be a requiem service for Mr. Merrill at St. James church at 8:30
tomorrow morning.
