JAMES LONGMEYER

James R. Longmeyer, age 66, of 1334 S. 21st St., Manitowoc, died Thursday evening, Oct. 13, 2005, at his residence after a 2 1/2 year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and leukemia. He was born Dec. 21, 1938, in Manitowoc, son of the late Carl and Evelyn Mecha Longmeyer. Jim was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of '57. He furthered his education by earning a degree from DeVry Technical Institute, Chicago. On Feb. 13, 1960, he married the former Marlene Toltzmann at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After their marriage they lived in Janesville for 12 years. After returning to Manitowoc, Jim was employed at Manitowoc Company and the Kohler Co., where he retired in 2001. Jim loved to read history books and travel to new places. He visited and toured 44 U.S. states, Canada and Germany. When he wasn't driving around obscure country roads, you could find him on the golf courses, softball fields, on a boat or on the ice at various fishing holes and even navigating hunting woods. It was only fitting that his love for the outdoors also included pitching a tent or camper. Jim was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served as a Lector, Religion Education instructor and Men's Club member. He also volunteered at the Red Cross as a driver and as a Lector at Holy Family Hospital. Jim had a passion for life and took advantage of every minute. Jim would socialize with anyone and once he met you, he considered you a friend. He enjoyed 45 loving years with his wife, Marlene, enjoyed watching his children grow up to be successful adults, and never wasted a precious minute with his grandkids. Survivors include his wife: Marlene Longmeyer, Manitowoc; a daughter and son-in-law: Katherine and Hans Haberman, Manitowoc; a son and daughter-in-law: William and Andrea Longmeyer, Waukesha; five grandchildren: Brian, Jeff and Harley Haberman, Derek and Lindsay Longmeyer; a brother and sister-in-law: Allen and Ruthanne Longmeyer, Manitowoc; and a sister and brother-in-law: Carole and Tom Wilms, Tampa, Fla. Also surviving are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dick and Joan Toltzmann, Green Valley, Ariz.; Nancy and Melvin Vilhauer, Cadott; Jean and Fred Onasch, Mondovi; Dale and Shiela Toltzmann, Friendship; Bruce Toltzmann, Tucson, Ariz.; Patty and Jim Kirchen, Manitowoc; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl (Smoky) and Ann Toltzmann; and a brother-in-law, Roy Toltzmann. The family will greet relatives and friends and the Pfeffer Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m., led by Deacon Phil Andrastek. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall Street, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Tom Wojciechowski O.F.M., with burial at the Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
