Following a 10-day illness Robert W. Lill, 80, (photo) lifelong
resident of Manitowoc and retired cigar manufacturer and dealer
died early today at the Holy Family hospital. He was moved to
the hospital from the home, 436 North Sixth street, when his
condition became serious.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Frazier
mortuary chapel, the Rev. C.H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian
church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Lill, active in business here and in this vicinity for more
than 50 years, had lived a retired life the past 15 years.
He was born in this city in 1861, his father having been street
commissioner here for many years when Manitowoc was a small
community. After he finished school he learned the cigarmaker's
trade in a south side shop and a few years later opened his own
shop on south Tenth street. A short time late he moved to
Washington street.
Mr. Lill then erected his own store and established a factory at
South Eighth and Quay streets, at the present site of the Commerce
block. He traveled through Manitowoc and adjoining counties for
many years disposing of the products of his cigar factory.
He married Miss Mary Kulnick of this city in 1887 and the couple
observed their golden wedding in 1937. Mrs. Lill died a few months
later.
Mr. Lill was a charter member of the Manitowoc lodge of Elks and
during his active life held membership in the Royal League and the
United Commercial Travelers.
His only survivor is a son, Major Archie V. Lill of the United
States army, who came here from Vera Beach, Fla., a few days ago,
called by the serious illness of his father.
The body may be viewed at the mortuary from Wednesday noon until
the hour of services Thursday.
