JOHN LEYKOM

DEATH'S SUDDEN CALL.
John Leykom, an Old and Respected Citizen Expires Suddenly.
HAD REACHED ADVANCED AGE.
Apparently in Good Health ???, Within a few Moments of Death.
John Leykom, an old and highly respected resident of the city, expired
suddenly at his home on Washingon street, this morning. With the exception
of a slight cold he had been in his apparently good health, and yesterday
was up and about the house as usual. This morning when his daughter called
him to breakfast he complained of his cold being worse and she returned to
the dining room to finish preparations for the meal. When she went to call
him again he had quietly passed from earthly care.
Mr. Leykom came to this city over 45 years ago and for nearly 26 years was
sexton at Evergreen cemetery. About twelve years ago he gave up the position
on account of his advanced age, and since that time has lived a quiet,
retired life. Although he was much interested in the development of the city,
and never tired of discussing the changes of half a century.
He was born in Germany, Dec. 17, 1809, being in his nintieth year when the
summons came. He left Germany in June 1827 and located at Quebec Canada. He
was married to Miss Anna Wallace, of Montreal, in 1845, and they came to this
city shortly afterwards. He was the father of thirteen children, four of whom
survive him, the others having died in infancy. His wife died fourteen years
ago and since that time his daughter has kept house for him. The children who
survive him are, John and Chas. Leyhom, and Mrs. Harriet Cole, of Antigo, and
Miss Mary Leykom, of this city. Deceased was a man of strong personality,
respected by all who possessed his acquaintance. The news of his death will
be learned with regret by many friends.
Funeral arrangements have not been made.
