James J. LaFond, age 68, a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, and formerly
of 1502 Kuhl St., Manitowoc, died Sunday, November 12, 2000, at St. Mary's Home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Innocents Catholic Church,
Manitowoc, by Rev. Gerald Foley, Thursday, November 16, 2000, at 11:30 a.m. Burial
will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, where military graveside rites will
be held by Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88.
Jim was born August 30, 1932, in Manitowoc, son of the late Roland Sr. and Martha
Mrotek LaFond. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950, and from Marquette
University's School of Business in 1960. He served with the United States Air Force
from 1951-1955. He married Rita Ann Delsman December 2, 1955, in Manitowoc. After
his graduation from Marquette University, Jim became employed at the Smalley
Manufacturing Company. He retired from Smalley as its president and owner. Jim was
a member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Holy Innocents Men's Choir, the Manitone
Quartet, the Knights of Columbus Council #71, the Manitowoc Elks Club #687, the
Yacht Club, F.E.M.A., the United Commercial Travelers, the Masquers, and the
Barbershoppers. Throughout our community, Jim was known as one of its outstanding
soloists.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Ann; two daughters, Michele Marie La Fond, Manitowoc,
Suzanne (Kevin) Hedican, Aurora, Colo.; two grandsons, Gavin and Quinn Hedican; two
brothers, Roland (Iola) LaFond, Jr., Manitowoc, John (Carole) La Fond, Franklin; a
sister-in-law, Bernice Meany, Manitowoc; a father-in-law, Quirin Delsman, Manitowoc,
also nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by
his parents; a son, Michael James LaFond; his mother-in-law, Irma Delsman; two brothers-
in-law, Roman Delsman and Bill Meany; a sister-in-law, Jeanette LaFond.
Friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, Wednesday, from
5-8 p.m. and Thursday at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, from 10:30 a.m. until the
time of Mass at 11:30 a.m. A prayer service will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
led by Deacon Paul Kieffer.
The LaFond family would like to extend a special "thank you" to all of the staff at
St. Mary' Nursing Home for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Jim during
the many years he was a resident there. God bless all of you.
