OTTO D. GERPHEIDE

Otto D. Gerpheide, 81, born in this city in 1855 and one of the early day
tobacconists of Manitowoc, died suddenly at his home, 1524 Clark street,
Sunday morning.
Death was due to a heart attack superinduced by excessive heat.
Despite his advanced age Mr. Gerpheide was active about the (illegible)?
retired life for several years. He suffered a fractured hip 11 years ago in
a fall from a step ladder.
Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral
home. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery
Mr. Gerpheide was born here in 1855, a son of the late J. D. Gerpheide, who
for many years owned the property now the site of the Holy Family hospital and
known as Gerpheide’s park.
Mr. Gerpheide opened a tobacco store in what was formerly the Beers’ property
on South Eighth street and later moved to Washington street between Ninth and
Tenth street. He was a cigar manufacturer and dealer for more than 30 years.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Fredericka Gerpheide, whom he married more than
50 years ago; two daughters, Mrs. E. W. Mackey, city, and Mrs. P. L. McCauley,
New Jersey; two brothers, Edward, of Pasadena, Calif., August, South Bend, Ind.;
three sisters, Mrs. H. H. Meyer, Minneapolis, Mrs. O. M. (illegible line)
Rockhoff, Cleveland, Ohio.
The body may be viewed at the Pfeffer funeral home Tuesday evening and Wednesday
morning.
