World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Lurgan, Ireland, he served as a Private in C Company, 14th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. Near Thiepval Wood, France, July 1, 1916, a box of grenades being opened for distribution prior to an attack slipped down into the trench, crowded with men, when two of the safety pins fell out. Private McFadzean, instantly realizing the danger to his comrades, threw himself on top of the bombs, which exploded and killed him. For his sacrifice and courage in saving the lives of others, he was posthumously vested the Victoria Cross and his award was presented to his father by King George V at a ceremony held in Buckingham Palace on February 28, 1917.
