He was the son of Levi Nye and Polly Kingsley Nye of Lee, Massachusetts. Freeman married Mary Ann Bassett on April 15, 1830 and they lived at Elyria, Ohio.

Their children were as follows:

Roxanna Nye born 1831.

Walter E. Nye born December 7, 1834 in Massachusetts.

Lucy T.Nye born 1840 in Ohio.

Edward born 1852 in Ohio.
