Elvin Royce Smith was born in 1883 in Bellwood, Bulter county, Nebraska to Elford Hiram Smith and Emily Augusta Royce Smith. His family moved to Franklin county, Nebraska in 1890. He graduated from the Franklin Academy (established in 1881 by the Congregational Church as college preparatory academy) in the town of Franklin, Nebraska. He graduated from Doane College in 1908. They were married on July 2, 1912 in Upland at the home of her parents. After their marriage they took up residence in her parents' house in Upland.
