First American to fire a shot at the British on the water. Led the party of Patriots that burned the English customs schooner HMS Gaspée off of Providence Rhode Island in 1772. (The site is now called Gaspée Point). He was the 12th commissioned officer in the US Navy and gave every thing he owned to the cause. Whipple stayed with the country and moved west to help in the founding of Marietta Ohio .
