Milwaukee Founder and Mayor. Born in Virginia, he moved with his family to Illinois in 1825 and relocated to the territory of Wisconsin in 1834. He purchased 160 acres and established a fur trading business. With the eventual growth of the area, it became known as "Walker's Point." In January, 1846, Walker's Point, Kilbourntown, and Juneautown were incorporated as the city of Milwaukee. Walker served in the territorial assembly, was the register of deeds, and an alderman. Elected as the Mayor of Milwaukee for two one-year terms, he served in 1851 and 1853. In business, he promoted the railroad industries, is credited with building the first street car line in the city in 1859, and was instrumental in establishing the location for a National Soldier's Home in the nearby town of Wauwatosa.
