Grinnell, IA — GRINNELL — Hildred Newcomer Davis, 89, of Grinnell, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Mayflower Homes Health Center in Grinnell.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Carmen Center at Mayflower Homes in Grinnell. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Burial will take place at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Mayflower Homes in Grinnell. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

Hildred Newcomer Davis was born on May 29, 1918, to Chester and Bertha Newcomer. She had three sisters Maxine, Viola and Imogene. They lived on a farm just outside of Grinnell. Hildred went to school at Newburg.

She graduated from high school and then went to State Teachers College (Now known as UNI) where she obtained her teaching certificate. Hildred obtained a teaching job in Washington, Iowa, where she met a grocery store employee named Rabern Davis.

They fell in love and were married in August of 1944, just before Rabern shipped overseas to France to fight in World War II. Hildred worked at the Camp Fire Girls office in Des Moines as well as at Camp Hantesa while he was gone. After Ray returned home, the couple settled in Monroe. Hildred was very active in the Methodist Church and a very devout Christian all of her life. She loved reading and music, which she passed on to her children.

Those left to honor her memory are: her husband of 63 years, Ray, of Grinnell; her children: Larry (Connie) Davis, who lives in Oskaloosa, Verrena (Craig) Robison, who teaches in North English and lives in Mt. Vernon, and Jerry (Janice) Davis, who teaches and lives in Monroe. Ray and Hildred have 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Viola Zimmerman and Imogene Knowles of Grinnell Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a son, Gary Wayne who died at one week and one sister.
