Major League Baseball Player. He was used mostly as a back-up catcher for seven seasons in the Major Leagues for two teams, the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Browns. In 1931, his first year in the Majors, he backed up catcher Bennie Tate. He took over the primary catcher position in 1932, backstopping 94 games. In 1933 he was again the reserve catcher behind Charlie Berry. On December 15, 1933 he was purchased by the Browns. After just a season with St. Louis, he was sent back to Chicago for cash on September 20, 1935. After the 1936 season he returned to the minors for a four year stint. He returned for an 18 game stay with St. Louis in 1941. He retired after that season and lived in New York City with his wife. There were conflicting reports as to his demise. The New York Herald-Tribune, reported that he was shot to death in the basement of his apartment building after a session of heavy drinking with his friends. The Sporting News reported that he was shot to death outside his apartment building by a prowler. Either way, he died as a result of gunshot wounds at the age of 40. Over the course of his career, he accrued a .244 lifetime average with 1 home run and 41 RBIs.
