Civil War Union Soldier. He enlisted as a Sergeant on August 5, 1861 in "Halsted's Horse Regiment", which would be re-named the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry in November 1861. On October 20, 1862 he deserted his unit, but was returned to duty on March 31, 1863 as a Private (to date from the day he deserted). He served until September 16, 1864, when he was honorably mustered out at the expiration of his enlistment.
