Joseph was 22 years old when he was struck by a car around 2 AM on the Sacramento highway near Twin Oaks Avenue. He died about two hours later. According to the story told by Joseph's companion, they were on the way to the Florida Inn where Joseph hoped to get a job as a chef. They came upon a car which had been upset, and they stopped to help right the vehicle. Afterward Joseph brushed some of the broken glass from the pavement. It was at this moment that a car struck Joseph, carrying his body more than 75 feet and hurling it against the fence. He was unconscious when picked up and was bleeding profusely. He was taken to Roseville but was advised to rush him to the hospital at Auburn where he died a few seconds after being placed on the stretcher. He was survived by his parents William and Alice, as well as his siblings Clyde, Frank, Howard, Norma, and Ethel.
