Amherst-John M. Sheldon, 85, of Amherst, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born August 8, 1923 in Elyria. He was a 1941 graduate of Elyria High School and he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII in the China-Burma-India Theater. he received the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronzes and the European-Africian Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
He graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.S. in Education in 1949 and an M.S. in Industrial Education in 1956.
He played football at Elyria High School and co-chaired the 50th anniversary celebration of the 1940 EHS football team.
He earned three letters at BGSU in football and played on the 1946 undefeated Falcon team. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Epsilon Pi Tau Industrial Education Honorary Fraternity. He taught Industrial Education at Elyria High School, where he coached varsity football from 1949 until retiring in 1979. He then taught Industrial Education and coached Varsity football at Wren High School in Anderson, South Carolina from 1979 to 1983, after which he returned to Elyria High School to coach for several years.
He was inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Lorain County Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991.
He was a 59 year member of First Methodist Church, Elyria, where he had taught Sunday school, was an usher and had served on many committees.
He was also a charter member of the Community United Methodist Church, Elyria.
Other memberships include Elyria American Legion Post 12 and Elyria Senior Fellowship.
He enjoyed spending his time with his family, watching his son and grandsons coach basketball, sporting events, especially LSU Football, traveling, boating and water skiing.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise S. (nee Jabbusch); children, Fred L. Sheldon (Mary Jane) of Melbourne, Florida, Rob J. Sheldon (Brenda) of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Susan L. McGonnell (Jim) of Findlay, Ohio, and Molly A. Lofton (Mervin) of Tiffin, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Molly Sheldon; and a sister, Ruth Wolfe.
Visitation will be Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A funeral service will be Monday 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 312 Third Street, Elyria with Reverend Roger Talbott officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Amherst, Ohio, where Elyria V.F.W. Post 1079 will conduct military honors.
