AFTER LONG SICKNESS
JOHN M. HENGSTLER ANSWERS THE LAST SUMMONS

Was Former Postmaster and Business Man and Known by all Defiance Citizens.

After a long siege of sickness lasting about six years, the venerable John Martin Hengstler, former postmaster, venerable tailor, and pioneer citizen of Defiance, passed away at 1:15 o'clock this afternoon.
The deceased had been a suffer for the past half dozen years from the ravages of old age and the results of a stroke of paralysis. Since last Christmas he has been entirely helpless and although really confined to his bed he would sit up from day to day. The venerable man became seriously ill last Friday a week ago and since then failed rapidly. His end was peaceful.
Mr. Hengstler was 67 years old the 5th of last June. He was born in Baden, Germany, in 1837 and came to this country at the age of 18 years. His detination (sic) was Defiance and he proceeded to this city immediately upon his arrival in New York.
As a citizen My Hengstler was probably known by everyone. His business career and his prominence as an office holder put in in this station.
For years he conducted a tailoring establishment in the room now occupied by Dicus' shoe store. He at that time owned the building and the one adjoining it on the corner. Mr. Hengstler was appointed postmaster during President Cleveland's first term and served the people in an able manner.
He held this position four years. He at various times was also township treasurer and agent for the United States and Pacific Express companies.
The deceased was a great worker in his church, being a member of St. John's German Catholic congregation. For twenty long years he was one of their councilmen. He was a member of the League of the Scared Heart.
Forty-two years ago last May 22nd, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Korn of Ft. Wayne, the ceremony occurring in this city. The result of this union was thirteen children, eight of who are living, sever girls and one boy. Those living are: Mrs. L. N. Shondel, Christina, Mrs. F.A. Walz, Lenora, and Leo of this city- Mrs. Charles Buddenhagen of Sandusky, Miss Anna of Toledo, and Sister M. Victorine of St. Agnes at Fon-du-Lac, Wis.
Mrs. Daniel Deatrick also of Defiance was an adopted daughter.
The funeral will occur Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from St. John's German Catholic church, Rev. Father Gloden conducting the services. Internment will be made in Riverside cemetery.
The deceased died at his home, corner of Wayne and Fifth strees, where he and his family have resided for many years.
