James Riley Donnelly

James Riley Donnelly, 83 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, Januayr 11, 2008 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain.

He was born March 27, 1924 in Lorain, Ohio. James was raised and was a lifetime resident of Amherst and graduated from Amherst High School.

James served in United States Navy during World War II as an First Class Petty Officer Engineer. He served on the USS Sterett Destroyer, USS Pilot Fish Submarine which was decommissioned and used in the Bikini Nuclear Bomb Test and the USS RazorBack Submarine. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, Navy Occupation Medal, China Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor Submarine Base. James saw much combat in the South Pacific, in the Battle of Guadal Canal and the Battle at Midway. He was a member for over forty years at the Elmer Johnson American Legion Post 118 in Amherst, the Atomic Veterans. James worked as an carpenter and at several large lumber Companies including Del Lumber as an estimator, before retiring in 1979. His hobbies included wood working, raising exotic birds, history and traveling.

Survivors include his son Tim Donnelly of Amherst and his daughter Jane and son in law Dave Prieto of Arizona; two grandsons and one great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years Jean Louise Donnelly (nee: Gordon) on March 13, 2001; his sisters Bernadine Crandell, Lela Jaworski; and by his parents Clyde and Minerva Donnelly.

Services will be private.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to CHP Regional Medical Center/New Life Hospice Center, 3700 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053
