Clem J. Rice, 91, Amherst Builder
Clem J. Rice, 92, of Amherst died Saturday at Amherst Retirement Center after an apparent stroke. He was born in Glovers Gap, W.Va.
Mr. Rice and his wife owned and operated Clem Rice Inc., a building company in Amherst from 1946 to 1976. With the company, they build homes and gas stations in Lorain County. He was responsible for building the first McDonald's in Lorain in 1961, located on State Route 6 at the present site of Dianna's Restaurant. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Rice was a member of Amherst Congregational Church and the Men's fellowship of the church. He was also a member of the Lion's Club of Amherst, where he was a charter member and past president. Through the Lion's Club, he was awarded their highest honor, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Honor. He was also a member of Helen Steiner Group in Lorain, the Elmer Johnson Post 118 of the American Legion, formerly in Amherst, the Al Koran Temple in Lorain, the Lorain County Shrine Club and the Scottish Rite.
In the late 1980s he served as president of the Lorain County Home Builder's Association.
During the 1980s, he and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Amherst Hospital. In 1986, both he and his wife were honored as Citizen of the Year by the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, acknowledging a lifetime of service to the City of Amherst.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Mr. Rice befriended Lorain County pilots and the "barnstormed" (performed aerobatics) where Mr. Rice performed wing-walking stunts on bi-planes and parachute jumping. He was known to be one of the first parachute jumpers in Lorain County.
Mr. Rice also enjoyed gardening along with his wife and he had a great love for children. Every year, he dressed as Santa and delivered gifts, candy and popcorn balls that his wife made, to any child he knew.
Survivors include his sons Richard E. and David L. both of Amherst, and William E. of Long Island, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and a sister Pearl Jacobs of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; and sisters Edna Rice, Shirley Humphrey and Goldie Jordan.
Friends may call 5 to 9 today at the Garland-Mesencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Ave., Amherst, where the Sheffield Masonic Lodge 608 will have a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Amherst Congregational Church, 379 S Main St., Amherst.
The Rev. Ileana Castillo-Roman and the Rev. P. William Vander-Wyden will co-officiate.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Amherst.
