He served in Charleston and Seven Pines, where he was wounded and captured. Bratton was promoted to Brigadier General on May 6, 1864 after the death of General Micah Jenkins. He surrender the largest brigade at Appomattox. After the war, he was elected to the South Carolina State Senate 1865-1866 and a member of Congress in 1884-1885.
