James served as a sergeant in Co. L, 6th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted on 7 Sep 1861 and mustered in at Shawneetown, IL on 15 Oct 1861.

Other census records indicate James was born about 1833, although the 1900 census indicates Mar 1838. His tombstone shows his birth date as 25 Mar 1833, but the space for his date of death is blank. His Williamson County, IL death record confirms his birth date as 25 Mar 1833 and provided his date and place of death, as well.

James was widowed and living in the Norris City village of the Indian Creek Township in White County, IL when the 1900 census was taken on June 1st of that year. James was living with his granddaughter, Bessie Jones Dorris, and her family on 25 Apr 1910 in Matagorda County, Texas when the 1910 federal census was taken.
