Monte Wood, long-time resident of Rome, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on June 27th. He had just celebrated his 95th birthday with family.

Mr. Wood was long admired and revered by many in the Rome community. He came here in the early 1930's after hearing about the work-study program offered at Berry Schools. He did indeed get an education there and also learned skills of brick and stone masonry allowing him to contribute heavily to many of the buildings at Berry that were then under construction.

After leaving Berry he joined the Tubize Corporation (later Celanese) where he worked until he retired in the 1970's. He was a manager and superintendent that was highly respected and loved by many of the employees there. He found his lifetime mate and married Charlotte Marie Bodine of San Antonio, Texas.

He served in World War II in the Air Force flying some 48 missions in the European Theatre. He was awarded numerous medals for his combat bravery. He was one of the founding members of the Civil Air Patrol in Rome.

After the war, he returned to Rome, his wife Marie and their young daughter Brenda, and resumed his career at Celanese Corporation. Monte and Marie soon expanded their family to include two more little girls, Wanda and Linda.

Monte became well known for his amazing gardening skills and shared his bounty with many family members and friends. He remained active, even after retirement, with his masonry skills. There is hardly a house in the whole community where he lived that does not bear his mark of brick or stone work. His many interest included a vital love for nature and conservation, spelunking, search and rescue for the Civil Defense, long hikes in the woods, a love of classical music, and a devout love for his family. He was a fine example of persevering strength and integrity. His caretaking and devotion of Marie in her later years was a shining light of love to her and an inspiration to family members. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Mr Wood is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Marie, his daughter Wanda Wood Duncan, his father William A. Wood & mother Mary Ryles as well as a brother, William Cecil Wood. Survivors include Brenda Wood Roy and husband Rick of Marietta, Linda Wood Simpson and husband Jack of Tallassee, Alabama, seven grandchildren, Chris Covington, Stacey Janes, Catherine Pugh, Anna Owens, Eric Kines, Janet Templin, Lydia Simpson, seven great grandchildren and two half-brothers Buddy Wood and Lonnie Wood.

There will be visitation Friday morning, 10:00 to 11:00, at Miller and Richards Heritage Chapel on North Broad. Interment will follow with a graveside service at East View Cemetery.
