John was over 40 years old when he enlisted in the 17th OVI. He fought through Chattanooga,Atlanta, Savannah, the Carolinas, and was mustered out in Washington City. His health was broken by the war, and when his son William was accused of the murders of the Weldon family, he became more debilitated. He suffered from kidney trouble, which turned into Bright's disease and caused his death. The following is an excerpt from his obituary:

"Few men were more popular or highly respected than John Terrel, and he probably had not an enemy in the world. Happy in his domestic and family relations, the trials that crossed his pathway seemed light as air, until his only boy began to give him trouble; and when that boy was charged with murder, and admitted that he was present when the killing was done, the father was apparently dazed, and has been unable to realize or talk about the horrible affair. He has never been well since the terrible charge has been hanging over his son but his death was sudden and unexpected."-- April 18, 1878 Logan Hocking Sentinel
