On December 6, 1952 in Bunker, Missouri, Don was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Akins who survives him.

Don was a member of Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church and a Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years. Don was still active with the retiree's UAW as the Financial Secretary and Treasurer for the Logan Baptist Association.

Don was preceded in death by one daughter, Vicky Lynn Brazel, his grandparents who raised him, Lewis and Emma Hayes and three brothers, Amon Akins, Hubert Akins and Louis Akins Jr.

Don is survived by his wife Shirley Hayes of Bunker, his mother, Inez Akins of Bunker, one son Donald C. Hayes Jr. and wife, Patti of Bedminster, New Jersey, five daughters, Judy Grither of Breckenridge, Missouri, Rhonda Kemper and husband, Barry of Cowpens, South Carolina, Chris Record and husband, Jerry of St. Ann, Missouri, Kim Vicich and husband, John of Fenton, Missouri, Nikki Deck and husband Chris of House Springs, Missouri, two sisters, Donna Rae Smith of Bunker, Trudy Burns and husband, Dick of High Ridge, Missouri, three brothers, Bob Akins and wife, Nora of Fenton, Missouri, Dick Akins and wife, Dorothy of Bunker, Ray Akins of Pilot Knob, 13 grandchildren , 23 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends who will mourn his passing.
