Douglas Matthew Allen
WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Douglas Matthew Allen, 93, of Black River Harbor, Ironwood Township, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, following a recent stroke.

Doug was born on March 8, 1919, in Anvil Location, Bessemer, the son of Ivar Alexander and Rose Marie (Mattson) Allen. He was a 1937 graduate of A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer.

Doug proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, serving on the USS West Virginia and USS Radford.

On Nov. 15, 1942, Doug married Lorraine Marie Trappa in Bessemer. They were blessed with three children. Lorraine preceded him in death.

On Oct. 12, 1985, he married Helen Josephine (Sorvala) Hukkala in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Doug was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay, the Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673, and the National Finnish American Society, as well as a friend of Little Finland.

In his working years, he was a miner, a boat builder, a self-employed antique dealer, a commercial and charter fisherman and a ski lift operator.

After his retirement, Doug and his wife wintered in Florida, Arizona and, for the most recent years, in Texas where they loved dancing and taught many friends to dance. At Black River Harbor the rest of the year, he did woodworking, building crosses and clocks, most of which he presented to family and friends. He was the unofficial harbormaster, walking the docks and patrolling the beach daily.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Helen; his son, Douglas (Kathleen), Streamwood, Ill.; his two daughters, Claudia (Robert) Frahm, Athens, Wis., and Diane (Terry) Livingston, Rock Springs, Wyo.; a brother, Lindy, Bessemer; his sister-in-law, Katherine Trappa, Bessemer; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; other loving relatives; his wonderful neighbors; and a host of friends.

Besides his first wife, Lorraine, he was preceded in death by his parents; his stepdaughter, Dee Sinn; a brother, Clyde; and two sisters, Sigrid Anderson and Annette Maki.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday, June 6, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay, from 10 to 11 a.m., where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. David Stevens officiating.

Following the service, military rites will take place at the church under the auspices of Bessemer American Legion Post 27 and Bessemer VFW Post 3673 Honor Guard.

A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the military honors.
