I believe the main reason for a lot of people stating that Philip is a son of Joseph J. Smith, Jr. & Experience Catherine "Mary" (Talbot) Smith is that a very nice family booklet was typed up and distributed widely. I received mine in the 1970's but it had been around for quite a few years. Mine was widely circulated among Smiths & Jameses. Within that was the following:
"The following information was taken from "The Atlas and History of Androscoggin County of Maine, East Livermore, Livermore Falls, Maine", Published 1873: The first settler was a Mr. Coolidge (Thomas Coolidge?) who made an opening in 1779 and built a log house in the NorthWesterly side of Moose Hill in the Northeast corner of the town. Soon after he sold the place to Philip Smith, son of Joseph Smith, Jr. Soon after he passed away, it became the possession of two of his daughters, one was Elizabeth Bird Smith." The Joseph Smith, Jr. portion is incorrect & was never part of the cited record.
Well, I've attached a copy of the actual article from "The Atlas and History of Androscoggin County of Maine, East Livermore, Livermore Falls, Maine", Published 1873" and as you can see there is no mention of Philip's parents, & I honestly believe that is where all the confusion is coming from.
That being said, I'll now try to explain how I came to adding Philip as a son of William & Catharine (Withington) Smith:
Philip & his wife Ruth (Hayward) Smith had three daughters:
- Ruth Hayward Smith (1800–???) never married
- Katherine Withington Smith (1802–???) never married
- Elizabeth Bird Smith (1805–1887) married first cousin Lemuel Smith
It is said the three daughters were named after family members, Philip's mother is Katherine (Withington), Philip's wife Ruth (Hayward), & Philip's wife's mother Elizabeth (Bird).
Philip's brother Nathaniel (making Lemuel Smith & Elizabeth Bird Smith first cousins) has been proven with records, to be the son of William & Catharine (Withington) Smith.
