Nathaniel served as a Corporal, 3rd Delaware Infantry, Company I during the Civil War.

The 3rd Delaware was assigned to the Relay House in Maryland to Guard the Railroad on June 24, 1863. They stayed there until March, 1864 when they were ordered to join the Army of the Potomac which they did. While assigned to the Relay house a number of their soldiers "Died Of Disease".

Nathaniel, when the 3rd Delaware was reassigned, was sick and stayed at the Relay House. He "Died of Disease" there during the war.
