W.C. "Sonny" Hopper, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2005. He was 78 years old.

He was born in Goose Creek, Texas on May 13, 1927. He attended Robert E. Lee High School and graduated in 1945. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Coxswain on the island of Guam from 1945 to 1947. Sonny was a Deacon and a member of the First Baptist Church in Highlands, Texas for 76 years.

Upon his return home from the Navy, he became engaged to Bettie Treat whom he had known since 2nd grade and were married on October 9, 1948. To this union, two children were born, Jill and Jan.

Music was Sonny's passion. An excellent vocalist, he sang for many weddings, funerals and community affairs. For years he led the choir at First Baptist Church in Highlands. He organized a choir for entertaining in nursing homes around the Houston, Baytown and Galveston areas. Sonny also sang in the Houston Symphony Choral for a number of years.

Sonny retired from Exxon Corporation after 38 years of service.

Always willing to be there for family or friends, Sonny?s strength, love and integrity were instrumental in shaping the lives of all those who knew him. He was a devoted husband, dad and grandfather who not only loved his family, he expressed it in so many ways. His life was a shining example of family values and dignity.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sonny?s honor to Hospice Austin's Christopher House, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Ste 100, Austin, Texas 78759.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Cleet and Sula Hopper; and brothers, Ray and Richard Hopper.

He is survived by his wife, Bettie Ruth; daughters, Jill Hopper and Jan Carlson and husband, Curt; grandsons, Clint Griffin and Cade Watkins, all of Austin; granddaughters, Kelli Cleveland of Clear Lake, Cara Watkins of Austin, and Cayce Watkins of Highlands; great-grandsons, Luke Watkins and Stevie Ray Lyle of Austin and Tommy Chaplin of Highlands; sisters-in-law, Peggy Brewer and Jean Treat, both of Baytown, Jimmie Tyree and husband, J.B. of College Station, Betty Jo Hopper of Baytown and Patricia Hopper of Mont Belvieu; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Entombment services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at Earthman Memory Gardens in Baytown.
