Harold was a member of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division and was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on July 25, 1950.

Corporal Sterling was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Previously he had served from 13 June 1943 to 22 March 1945 in World War II. He reenlisted on 11 March 1948 and served in Korea.
