Richard served as a Private, Company F, 3rd Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He received a gun shot wound to left leg at the battle of Antietam. He was sent to the Frederick General Hospital in Frederick, Maryland.

Richard "Died of Disease" (Chronic Diarrhea) at the hospital during the war.
