Mary Elizabeth (Baker) Baker, of New Oxford, departed this life peacefully August 4, 2012, and now rejoices with her Savior. She was the wife of Dr. William R. Baker.

Mary was born in York on September 3, 1927, to the late William H. and Rebecca (Yeagley) Baker.

Mary Baker had a megawatt smile and a gracious, generous spirit. She lived life fully, a loving wife and mother with an astute business sense who was passionate about serving her church and community. Deeply patriotic, she loved history and enjoyed spending time with family and friends and traveling with her husband Bill. Grandma Mary was a much sought-after partner in card games and had killer Sudoku- solving skills. Her gifts of cooking and warm hospitality created countless happy memories of holiday meals and summer picnics at their homes in York and later, on Lake Pahagaco, in Spring Grove.

An alumna of Penn State University, Mary graduated from Dana Hall Prep School (Wellesley, MA). She also attended Chevy Chase Junior College (Washington, DC) and Oklahoma University.

Mary served on the board of directors of the J. E. Baker Co. as its assistant secretary. She was a member and former trustee of Asbury United Methodist Church and past president of the United Methodist Women. Mary was a life member of the advisory board of The Salvation Army York. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society-Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century. She was also a member of the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the U.S. Colonial Dames of America In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Baker served in the auxiliaries of the York Heritage Trust and the York Symphony. She was a member of the Country Club of York.

She is preceded in death by her brother John E. Baker II and a daughter, Mary Susan. In addition to her husband Bill, she leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Rebecca "Beppy" Baker and her husband Don. Her loving family also includes: Katharine Pilarski and her husband, Mark, Frank Baker and his wife, Michele, William Jr., and Rebecca Postma and her husband, Frank. Mary's six grandsons are Joseph Pekarek and his wife, Meeah, William Pekarek and his wife, Andrea, David Pekarek and his wife, Christina, Andrew Baker, Daniel Baker and his wife, Annie and Cooper Postma. She is also survived by a great-grandson, Jack Pekarek.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 340 E. Market St., York. Entombment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
