Emil J. Kulhanek Jr. passed away Monday, June 30, 2003, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at the age of 78.
He was born June 28, 1925 to Mildred (Novotny) and Emil J. Kulhanek Sr. in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Kewaunee High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy. A World War II veteran, Emil served from 1943-46 aboard the AP-111 troop transport - USS General A.E. Anderson.
Then, 1947-1949, Emil attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI.
On Dec. 31,1949, Emil married Birdie Blahnik and they moved out to Missoula, Montana, where Emil attended the University of Montana (MSU back then) and finished his Forestry Degree.
During Emil's years in the U.S. Forest Service, they made their home in a variety of places including Kingston, Idaho; St. Regis, Mont.; Sandpoint, Idaho; and finally Coeur d'Alene, Idaho where he retired in 1981 after 30 years of service.
Emil enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and especially after his retirement, rebuilding and modifying classic cars. His pride and joy was his red 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible.
Emil's survivors at the time included his wife Birdie at home; sons Emil J. Kulhanek III, Tustin, CA, and John F. Kulhanek, Coeur d'Alene, ID; daughter Mary Ann DeFrank and favorite son-in-law Charles DeFrank, Portland, OR; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Alice Webb on Feb. 14, 2003.
Visitation was held Monday July 7, 2003 from 9am - 5pm at the English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N 4th in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 am Tuesday July 8, 2003 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 Indiana, Coeur d'Alene, ID, where he was a member.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Museum of North Idaho, PO Box 812, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83816-0812
