Titanic Passenger. He earned his A.B. at Harvard College in 1907. He was the son of George Dunton Widener and Eleanor Elkins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All three were first class passengers on the Titanic. Widener was a book collector and bibliophile. His collection included a Gutenberg Bible, a Shakespeare Folio, and a major Robert Louis Stevenson collection. Widener was 27. His mother Eleanor reported that he drowned holding a rare book. His extensive library of rare books was given to Harvard, where it was installed with other collections, in the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library. The library, designed by Philadelphian Horace Trumbauer was donated by Eleanor Elkins Widener to honor his memory.
