Betty A. 'Nana' Hayman
Longtime owner of Nana's Restaurant
Betty A. "Nana" Hayman, age 85, 1690 Old Tioga Turnpike, Stillwater (New Columbus), died at 10:35 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Janet, in New Columbus. She was in failing health for the past three years.
Born at Waterton, Huntington Township, Luzerne County, on Sept. 10, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Frease M. and Helen M. (Betterly) Rhone. She resided in New Columbus since 1943.
Betty owned and operated Nana's Restaurant on Route 487 in Fishingcreek Township for 25 years, retiring on June 1, 2002. Her friends and family all called her Nana and so did many of her restaurant patrons who were like family to her.
She was a longtime member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church and earlier had been a member of the former New Columbus United Methodist Church. At the Church she assisted in the dining room for festivals and dinners, as well as the Bloomsburg Fair stand for 15 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Quentin D. Hayman, on June 26, 1991; a son, Bernard F. Kocher, on July 4, 1999; a great-granddaughter, Erica D. Yost, on Aug. 18, 2007; two brothers: James F. Rhone and Henry C. Rhone; and a sister, Blanche M. Woodside.
Surviving are three children: Janet L. Yost, New Columbus; Larry H. Hayman, and his wife, Bertha, Stillwater; Rebecca, wife of Dean A. Montreuil, currently in Brisbane, Australia; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Mary J., wife of Charles Woodside, Unityville; and a brother, Robert F. "Butch" Rhone, and his wife, Juanita, Shickshinny.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Benton, with her pastor, the Rev. Bethany P. Wood, officiating. Interment will be in Dodson Cemetery, Southdale, Huntington Township, Luzerne County. Viewing will be on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.
The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be sent to the Town Hill United Methodist Church, 417 Town Hill Road, Shickshinny, PA 18655 or you are encouraged to plant a tree in her honor.
