David served as a Private, Company D, 3rd Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He "Died of Wounds" during the war. He was on detached service with 1st New York, Battery K, and he was wounded in action along the Rappahannock River and died in a Hospital in Washington D.C. during the war.
