HELENA — Carol H. Waller died peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on May 24, 2010, after a courageous struggle with cancer.

Carol was born on March 9, 1941, in Livingston, to Oswald and Sylvia Versland. Her brother, Bert, joined the family in 1944. Later, Carol's mother married Elling Indreland. The family moved to Elling's Willow Creek sheep ranch outside of Roberts. Elling became a very important part of Carol's life.

Carol graduated from High School in Roberts in 1959 and attended Community College in Glendale, Ariz., and Montana State University Billings. Carol was an excellent writer and, at one time, she owned and published the Clark's Fork Pioneer Newspaper in Fromberg.

Carol married Larry Yentes in 1961. Carol and Larry had two daughters, Jackie Griffin of Phoenix and Laurie Fritts of Helena. Carol and Larry later divorced and Carol married Robert Fritts, who adopted the girls. Carol and Bob divorced and, in 1986, Carol married the love of her life, Gordon Waller. Gordon passed away on July 18, 2000.

Carol struggled with bipolar disease and depression and was a strong advocate for those persons who are handicapped by mental or physical illness. She worked hard with the NAMI program in Montana and received a Certificate of Achievement for her efforts.

Carol's daughter, Laurie, suffers a handicap and Carol worked tirelessly to ensure that Laurie was and is taken care of through her "family" at Spring Meadow Resources.

Carol was also an accomplished artist who greatly enjoyed sketching and painting throughout her life.

Carol has generously donated her body to Montana State University for use in the WWAMI Medical Education Program.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Oswald Versland, Sylvia and Elling Indreland; her brother, Bert Versland; and her husband, Gordon. She is survived by her daughters; grandson Joel Griffin of Arizona, and several cousins. She is also survived by her Helena cousin, Bonnie McFarland, and special friend Jill Domitrovich Aspholm and her Happy dog now in the care of Jill.

A memorial service celebrating Carol's life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, with Lowell Bartels presiding. Her burial will take place at St. Olaf Cemetery at Red Lodge next to her husband Gordon Waller.

Donations may be made to NAMI, Montana, PO Box 1021, Helena, MT 59601, or the St. Peter's Hospital Oncology Unit, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.
