NEWPORT NEWS - Elliott "Ben" Stuart Gay, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002. A native of Boston, Mass., he grew up on the Peninsula. He graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1933 and later retired as a machinist from N.A.S.A. One of his great loves was teaching. He taught science and math, for 25 years, at Peninsula Catholic. He was an active member of Denbigh Baptist Church, where he had served for many years, in the capacities of head usher, trustee and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Russell Mitchell Sunday school class. Mr. Gay was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and three sisters. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Margaret Rew Gay; Joyce W. Dick, who was like a daughter, and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Robert Murray Dick III of Ashland and Cynthia L. Barnes of Joplin, Mo., and a special and devoted friend, Marvin Grubbs. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to caretakers, Ramona Barnhill and Tameka Johnson. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Denbigh Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Herbert Arnold and Rev. Bob Mosley. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Denbigh Baptist Church, New Handicapped Entrance Fund, 13010 Mitchell Point Drive, Newport News, VA 23602.
