Lucretia Louise del Valle was born 18 Oct 1892 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA to Reginaldo Francisco and Helen May (White, widow of Thomas John Caystile) Del Valle. Her paternal grandparents were Eufemia Ysabel Varela and her husband Ygnacio Ramón de Jesus Del Valle owners of Rancho Camulos.

Lucretia Louise del Valle married 18 Oct 1917 Henry Francis Grady, Sr. who served as Assistant Secretary of State and Ambassador to India, Greece, and Iran. She died 23 May 1972 in San Mateo, San Mateo, California, USA. Their daughter Patricia Louise Grady married "China Hand" John Paton Davies, Jr.

'Great Lady' Lucretia Grady Dies at 79

Mrs. Lucretia del Valle Grady, acclaimed as "ona of the greatest ladies in the history of San Francisco," died today of a heart attack at Mills Memorial Hospital in San Mateo.

The widow of Henry Francis Grady, distinguished shipping executive and ambassador, was 79.

During her long association with the Democratic Party, she twice seconded the nomination of Franklin Delano Roosevelt for President.

Official

During the Roosevelt administration, she was vice chairman of the Democratic Central Committee for eight western states.

Her acclaim as "one of the greatest ladies" came from Mayor Alioto during a banquet in her honor in 1970.

Mrs. Grady was a member of a pioneer California family established here in the late 1700s at the time of Father Junipero Serra. Her father was speaker of the California Assembly and the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

Pioneer

Last year, when she was named honorary chairman of the executive committee of the Northern California Citizens for Muskie, William M. Roth hailed her a "a pioneer for peace, a pioneer for women's rights and one of the truly great people of California."

Last August she was presented an award of merit, a gold charm bracelet, by Alioto for being "a first-class San Franciscan." It was the latest in a long series of honors for her extensive work in fields of civic betterment, politics and art.

Her late husband was president of American President Lines and had served in such government posts as U.S. ambassador to Greece, India and Iran.

Mrs. Grady was chairman of the Women's Conference at the formation here of the United Nations. She was one of the Examiner's Distinguished Women in 1964.

She considered as her greatest accomplishment her role in helping end a civil war in Greece when her husband '. was ambassador there.

She promoted a public meeting in the Athens Coliseum. "More than 360,000 persons attended and the war came to a finish seven days later," Mrs. Grady later recalled. She helped raise $1 million for Greek relief.

Survivors

Mrs. Grady is survived by three sons. Reginald of Hillsborough, Henry F. Jr., of San Francisco and John of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. John Patton Davies of Malaga, Spain, and 14 grandchildren. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Ca-rewe and English, 350 Masonic.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Old St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery..
