• Henry2 Wight (Thomas1) born at England, settled with his parents at Dedham in 1637. He joined the Dedham Church Aug. 14, 1646, and was admitted a freeman of the Mass. Bay Mar. 26, 1647. In 1652 he received two acres of land from his father; "Thomas Wight doe alienate and grante unto Henery Wight his sonne." About the time of this grant Henry m. Jane Goodenow of Sudbury [but the date of the m. cannot be found in any pub. VR or Church rec.]. Henry Wight remained at Dedham when the remainder of his father's family removed to Medfield.
• He is first mentioned in Dedham records in connection with town affairs in 1653, being appointed to the discharge of a town office. In 1658 he was made constable by the General Court. He was a selectman of Dedham for ten years, his first service being in 1661, and held that office at his death. In 1665 he received a grant of 120 acres from the town. On Feb. 24, 1671 [1671/2], Henry Wight was one of three Dedham citizens appointed to lay out a house lot for Rev. Samuel Mann [the memorialist's ancestor] at Wrentham, and to take care about the church lot there.
• Henry is mentioned in his father's will as "my eldest son," and "my well beloved son," and was appointed one of his father's executors. Henry received in his father's will his father's "houses and lands lying and being in Dedham." This devise included the original grant of 12 acres from the town to Thomas Wight. Henry d. intestate at Dedham, Feb. 27, 1680 [sic, 1680/81] - or, as the record puts it, "Sergt. Henery Wight deceased 27:12:80" [sic]. Under date of Mar. 14, 1680 [1680/81] "At a Generall Meeting it was proposed whether the Town would chose another selectman in the room of Sergt. Wight, deceased." Power to administer his estate was granted Apr. 26, 1681 "unto Jane, his relict widow and Joseph Wight his eldest son." The inventory, accepted two days later, aggregated £524.1.0.
