Dorothy was the 9th child of William James and Julia Olendorf Gifford. Three weeks after her birth Julia died from childbirth complications. Within a short period of time William decided to move his family to Minnesota and left Dorothy with Pastor George L. and Minnie W. Allan. The Allan's adopted Dorothy but she maintained contact with her siblings and extended family throughout her life. She married William Royal Taylor and they had a son George Allan Taylor.
