Hans was born on 20 Jul 1851 on the Dragsæt farm in Midtre Gauldal, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway where his parents, Haldo Nilsen and Guru Hansdatter, were tenant farmers. He was baptized in the Norwegian Lutheran church on 3 Aug 1851 in Soknedal church in the parish of Størens.
In 1874 at the age of 23 he immigrated to the United States with an older sister named Eli. They settled in Menomonie where Eli was married that same year to John P. Hugdahl, another Norwegian immigrant. Hans lived with Eli & John during his first years in Menomonie when he was employed in the local lumber industry.
On 27 Aug 1881, at the age of 30, Hans was married in a Lutheran church in the city of Menomonie to Elise Olsdatter Kjus, 22, another Norwegian immigrant, daughter of Ole Olsen and Inge Maria Andrea Andersdatter.
Hans came to the United States with a wooden trunk filled with carpentry tools given to him by his father. After some years working as a laborer in the timber industry, he worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker until he retired.
Hans was widowed on 30 Jan 1903 when his wife, Elise, died of Tuberculosis. Nearly two months later, their eldest child, Gyda, succumbed to the same infectious disease.
He was survived by two daughters, Sophie (Bernt) Alseth, Inga Dragseth, and one son, Oscar (Hazel) Dragseth, all of Menomonie, and three grandchildren, James & Bernice Alseth (Menomonie) and Marcha St. John (St. Paul, Minn.), as well as sister, Eli (Menomonie) and sister-in-law Guru Olsdatter Bergsrønning of Norway.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Gyda, son, Helmer, brother, Nils, brothers-in-law, John P. Hugdahl, Oleus Olson, John Olson, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Martin (Sina) Nelson.
Hans was buried alongside his wife, Elise, on 15 Dec 1922, at Evergreen cemetery in the city of Menomonie.
