Murrill Downer Smithka, age 86, of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on Tuesday morning, July 3, 2012 in the Christopher Center at Our Lady of Peace. She was born on August 29, 1925 in Chesterfield, Virginia and was the youngest daughter of Horace Mather Scanland and Arnita Christian Scanland.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Hartwell Downer and second husband, John G. Smithka.

In 1942, she graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia. She went on to attend Mary Washington College from 1942 to 1944. In 1946, she graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She had a sweet, loving disposition and faced adversity with courage and grace. She loved popular music, and was especially fond of performers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Downer Lewis, her husband Ron and their son Flynn, all of Batesville, Virginia; her daughter, Suzanne Christian Downer of Oakland, California; and her son, Robert Hartwell Downer Jr., his wife Pattie of Charlottesville, Virginia; and their sons, William (Sonny) and his wife Apple of Sacramento, California, Reid of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Gregory and his wife Stephanie of Charlottesville, Virginia. She is also survived by her sister, Madeline Bruce and her husband Douglas of Richmond, Virginia, her brother, H. M. (Buzz) Scanland and his wife JoAnn of Elliston, Virginia, her brother-in-law, William B. Downer of Charlottesville, Virginia and her sister-in-law, Hazel Peacock of Falls Church, Virginia.

A special thank you from her entire family, to the staff of Our Lady of Peace and especially to the staff of the Christopher Center, for providing her with a loving and caring place to call home, when she was no longer able to live on her own.

A memorial service will be held at Olivet Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2012. The Reverend Albert Connette will officiate.

Interment will take place privately at Monticello Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 7:30 pm until 8:30 pm on Friday, July 6, 2012.
