Composer. Born in Vienna, he was a composer of classical music and film scores. Self-taught, he came to America in 1934, settling in Hollywood and began to write music for films, symphonies, chamber music, chamber operas. He wrote seven symphonies from 1950 to 1964, was nominated for two movie scores Oscars and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1956 for his Third Symphony. He also wrote books dealing with musical theory such as "Melodielehre" (1923) and "The Shaping Forces in Music" (1948). He died in Santa Monica, California.
