She was born in Norwich, Conn. on November 25, 1954 to Bernie and Pauline Marchant and later raised in Westbrook. She graduated from Westbrook High School in 1973 and later earned her Bachelor's Degree, while maintaining a full time job and raising a family.
Martha had an adventurous spirit and was an avid sailor, navigating the inter-coastal waterway from New York and eventually making port in Saint Thomas. Throughout her life, she most enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.
Martha had a passion for life. She loved experiencing new places, people and activities. Martha never met a stranger... always able to carry on a conversation with anyone as if she had known them for a lifetime. She possessed a great inner strength and will power. She shared her knowledge, wisdom, energy and love with all who met her. The warmth of her smile was always felt by those who surrounded her. Even in the last days of her life, she was devoted to making people happy with her remarkable sense of humor; never complaining or placing blame. Those who knew her well will hold dear to their hearts the blessing it was to have known her.
During her professional career most recently as a Shortage Control Manager for the 7-11 Corporation in Fort Meyers, Fla., she demonstrated a remarkable devotion not only to her responsibilities, but also to the staff she closely supervised. In the early part of her career, her zest for adventure earned her the opportunity to be a business owner, EMT for an ambulance and rescue service and to manage the operation of various businesses.
She leaves behind her mother Pauline Marchant of Westbrook; a husband, Harold Garner of N.C.; a son, Nathan Sanborn of Portland; three brothers, Billy and his wife, Brenda of Dexter, Cliff and his wife, Norma of South Portland, and Steve and his wife, Loreen of Westbrook; a sister, Edna and her husband, Arthur of Fort Meyers, Fla., as well as extended family and many special friends.
She was predeceased by her father, Bernie Marchant and infant brother, James. Martha will be sadly missed and remembered for the lives she touched in so many special ways.
There will be a period of visitation from 10-11 Am on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, with a memorial service to follow at 11 AM. Burial will be at Black Point Cemetery, Scarborough.
