~Veralee's story~

At the time of Veralee's death, Chelsey was dating a man named Preston King. In the three months leading up to Veralee's death, Jonathan said he was trying to visit his daughter, but was unable to. He lived in another town, and Chelsey had full custody of Veralee. Jonathan had called police twice and asked them to go check on Veralee. The officer went and reported that there were no signs that Veralee was being abused in any way, and that she seemed to be well cared for.

On July 23rd, 2012, he was called and told that Veralee was in the hospital. He quickly went to the hospital to see her. The last time he had seen Veralee, she was a happy and healthy little girl who was just learning to walk. At the hospital, she had bruises on her face, skull fractures, and an injured nose. Her eyes were red and puffy. Both of her legs were broken, and one of her arms was broken too. Her shoulder was also broken.

Veralee sadly died from her injuries two days later, and her organs were donated so she could help save the life of another child. It was discovered that Veralee had been injured while in the care of her mother's boyfriend. Preston lived with his mother, and was watching Veralee while her mother went to work. Preston had beaten Veralee and then put her to bed. After Veralee was put to bed, she stopped breathing at some point. Unfortunately, the efforts of doctors at the hospital could not save her.

Preston King was sentenced to 60 years in prison with 28 years suspended.
