Anne Marie was born on 15 Aug 1822 in what is now Målselv in the county of Troms, Norway. She was the third child and first daughter of Ole Gulbrandsen and Martha Johnsdatter, owners of the farm of Brandskognes along the Målselva river. The same farm today is owned and operated by the great grandson of her younger brother, Hagen.

At the age of 20 she was united in marriage at the church in Lenvik to Anders from the nearby farm of Moen. He was the son of Ole Tollefsen and Berit Nilsdatter. They made their home at Moen where their first eight children were born.

In the early 1860s her husband sold his share of the Moen farm in Målselv, and the family set out for America, settling in 1862 on a 160 acre tract of wild land in what later would become the town of Colfax. They were among the towns first European settlers, their nearest neighbor, Ole Running, for whom Running Valley is named, being located some seven miles away.

Anne Marie died at the age of 62 on 6 Nov 1884 and was buried alongside Holden Lutheran church of which she was a founding member and zealous supporter. Her original marker is unreadable today, having been eroded by the elements and later covered by vegetation. When her husband died in 1901, they were both memorialized by a larger obelisk-shaped marker that was erected on the family's plot.
