Leora Wilt Bailey born on July 21, 1914, went to heaven on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband, Verbert Glen Bailey; her parents, Ocie Smith Wilt and Dennis Wilt; sisters, Elva Crane and Eunice Ryder; and brothers, Ray and Marvin Wilt. She is survived by her daughters, Loretta Reid and Charlotte Bailey; grandchildren, Katherine Tevis, Paula Hawkes, and David Reid and Michelle; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Ritta Browning; brother, Freddie Wilt; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. The oldest of seven children, Leora was born in Fayette County, West Virginia. The family moved to Hot Springs, Virginia, when she was very young. There she met her childhood sweetheart and later married him. They had 41 wonderful years together before his untimely death in 1974. Always available to her family and friends, Leora was kind and generous. She frequently sent meals or goodies to family and friends. A role model for children and grandchildren, she loved to cook and bake and frequently said the kitchen was her favorite room. She enjoyed sharing receipes and teaching the correct techniques for getting her famous pound cakes and lemon pies just right. She loved to make cucumber pickle and strawberry jam and enjoyed even more giving jars of each away to friends and family.

She loved flowers and had them in her yard and patio all season. She loved fresh flowers and enjoyed arranging them for any occasion.

In 1948, the principal of the Orange Elementary School asked Leora to help out in the school cafeteria until he could find someone permanently. 27 years later, she retired from the school cafeteria. Over the years people would stop her on the street or in a store and tell her they remembered her and the wonderful meals she served in school. A favorite was the vegetable soup and peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Always independent and ready for a challenge, she learned to drive and got her driving permit at age 60. Over the years she survived breat cancer, a serious heart condition and had three pace makers. She was such a survivor and fighter that the VCU Medical College asked her to make a video regarding her cancer treatment experience. She was also invited to give interviews and was asked to talk with other patients who were considering the same treatment.

Leora was a strong and loving person who will be missed and always loved.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2012, at Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment to follow at the Graham Cemetery. The Reverend Sandra Bottoms will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.
