He was the son of Thomas and Julia (Johnson) Montgomery. He was only a month old when his father was murdered by a 15 year old neighbor boy.

His mother married again and had four more children. She married a 3rd time and had five children. He grew to adulthood with his nine half siblings on a farm in mid section of Tennessee.

Robert first married Alice Rash, 6 Dec 1877, Jackson Co., TN. Alice gave birth to a son, James, on 6 March 1879 and died the next day.

He married 2nd to Martha Catherine Simpkins, 12 Oct 1880, Franklin County, Illinois. In 1888 this young family moved to Pettis County, Missouri in a wagon pulled by a yoke of white oxen. About 1907 they settled on a farm in White Oak Twp. of Henry County near the town of Urich

He suffered from dementia in his old age and died after a 14 day stay in the state hospital in Vernon County, Missouri.

His funeral was held at the Christian Church in Urich. Pastor McCance delivered the serman, songs were rendered by the Urich mens quartet; W.H. Erwin, Bert Massingill, Joe McCoy and H.H. Ross. Six grandsons; Francis, Allen, Phillip, Paul and Glen Montgomery and Johnny Koch, carried the casket as the body was laid to rest in the Urich Cemetery.
